Radiology Technician
General Summary
Performs all routine radiographic examinations and assist in Fluoroscopic procedures to young adult-geriatric patients in a manner ensuring that studies produced are of appropriate technical quality; are produced in a timely manner consistent with TBSG goals and objectives; are produced in a manner ensuring the minimum possible radiation exposure to the patient; and are produced in a manner ensuring the delivery of appropriate general patient care.

- Specific Responsibilities:
- Performs patient care functions
- Verifies patient's ID.
- Shares in the responsibility in greeting the patient upon arrival in The Boston Spine Group and is responsible for the patient until discharge.
- Assesses patients' physical condition, comfort, mobility, and ability to actively participate in movement during the exam. Provided mobilization devices when required.
- Assesses patients' general mental awareness, general emotional and physical states, and accordingly modifies approach to care delivered and exam performed.
- Attends to patients' comfort, modesty, and physical safety in accordance with prescribed safety standards.
- Verifies demographic and clinical Information on the requisition and the presence of written order in patient chart. Obtains additional clinical history as needed. Determines sequence of multiple exams.
- Exercises confidentiality with respect to patient information complies with HIPAA.
- Performs requested/required exams in a time frame consistent with departmental standards and in a manner consistent with quality standards of the department:
- Consistently and accurately positions patients for each radiographic projection or C-Arm procedure.
- Consistently and accurately maneuvers each piece of equipment (tube head, table, bucky mechanism, etc.) used for each of the routine exams/procedures .
- Consistently and accurately determines set of exposure factors required to produce a diagnostic image for each of the routine exams and accurately adjusts controls to deliver an appropriate exposure.
- Demonstrates thorough knowledge of human anatomical structure, physiological function and pathology.
- Accurately determines level of diagnostic quality for images produced, correctly determining need for repeat exposure, as well as corrections needed.
- Consistently practices proper aseptic and/or sterile technique during appropriate exams.
- Consistently performs imaging duties within a time frame appropriate for exams performed and patient conditions.
- Monitors radiation delivery:
- Utilizes patient shielding devices and procedures.
- Reviews own personal radiation exposure monitoring reports.
- Monitors individual radiation exposure to meet ALARA parameters.
- Performs various non-imaging functions:
- Shares in the responsibilities of transporting patients to and from the X-ray room.
- Shares in the responsibilities of the clerical personnel in the department when necessary.
- Exercises initiative in assisting other sections of TBSG.
- Participates in TBSG activities and in-service education programs as scheduled or assigned.
- Participates in the orientation of students engaged in clinical education affiliation, new technical staff, and other TBSG staff as assigned.
- Maintains orderliness and cleanliness of equipment and rooms. Keeps the rooms fully supplied.
- Effectively and appropriately communicates with patients, peers, Radiologists, other TBSG employees.
- Plans time away from work appropriately:
- Arrives and leaves at designated times.
- Uses unplanned earned time appropriately. (Based on full time hours. Standards are pro-rated for part-time employees based on agreed hours.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Associate degree or equivalent required.
- Thorough knowledge of all professional radiographic techniques preferred, or at a minimum clinical knowledge and experience in medical radiography sufficient to perform on the entry level as defined in the American Society of Radiologic Technologists "Task Inventory for Entry Level Radiographers".
Required License, Certification, and Competencies
- Commonwealth of Massachusetts Radiologic Technology Licensure.
- Registration/Certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists or other equivalent certifying body.
- Maintains competencies required for the specific patient population served.
OSHA Exposure
The nature of the tasks/responsibilities required of employees in this position will likely expose them to blood and bodily fluids. Employees will be oriented to and required to understand and follow the universal precautions for infection control.
Reporting Relationship
- Reports to the Operations Manager, executive director, and physician members of The Boston Spine Group.
